Home sweet home
What do we have on our mind when we think of Home? Ask a child to draw a home, and as a result in most cases, you will get a roof, four walls, windows and a door. But is that really the essence of Home, or is it a lot more than that?
Home it is some special place where we feel happy and safe. “My home is my castle” says an old English proverb. But sometimes people have to leave their home. There are many reasons for that, but the most common reasons are: work, climate, health, some people emigrate due to their desire to change living conditions.
But emigration has its good and bad points. Above all it is not easy to emigrate.
The good points are the following: improving your housing conditions, your career, your health. In another country you may have more opportunities for learning or working.
But on the other hand there can be some problems. It’s a nail biting process. At first it will cost you a lot of money to move to another country. Then it can be very hard to get used to new culture, new lifestyles, new time zone, and new climate and consequently to new people around you. And of course you will miss your native home and your friends there.
Language barrier seem quite natural. It may take a long time to start understanding your new friends and colleagues clearly. But it’s more likely that your children later will eventually become bilingual. This is the definite advantage.
The second most significant thing is getting a job. It’s not an easy task to get a job in foreign country.
Moreover, every country has it’s own traditions and habits which you ought to be ready to accept. You should be ready for great changes in your life and for a cultural shock.
If you do need or have to emigrate so why not? But if you are in doubt you better think twice even. As the Russians put it “You measure 7 times before you cut”. Especially when your health and family relations are at stake. It will take you a long time to start feeling like home in foreign country. Sometimes people never get used to a new place of living and they dream about coming back.
Nevertheless, coming back is as difficult as leaving. And all in all you will encounter the same difficulties. It is easier when you still have a place to return, that home with a roof, four walls, windows and a door. But very often people just do not have place to live in native land. Native culture has also been changing while you were out. And you can be “hit” by cultural shock again. There is a chance that you will not recover from it.
In conclusion, coming back is not always the best way. You will always be a part of your native culture but maybe it is better become a part of a new culture too? This could help to feel like home in the foreign country.
